Rest Days in Orlando (away from the parks)

Nighttime in Orlando

Why do we go to Orlando? For the awesome theme parks of course!! But after a few solid 13-hour days of zooming from park to park, ride to ride and trying to cram in as much fun as possible – well I’m fancying a lie down just thinking about it.

Which is why a good old rest day away from the parks can be total bliss. Depending on how many days you’re spending in Orlando (and how hardcore you are!) you’ll probably want to take a day out for every 3-4 days you spend at the parks.

Here are some recommendations for how to spend a rest day:

Have a Lie-in!

First things first. You’ve more than likely been getting up early to beat the crowds at the parks, so switch off that alarm and bank some extra Zs – you’ve earned it!

Shopping

Millenia
Florida’s Millenia Mall

Even if shopping isn’t really on your agenda, a mooch around Florida’s amazing malls is a must-do at some point on your trip, and they’re a good place to get some shade (and air-con!) when the sun is at its hot-hot-hottest – as well as being a perfect option if you get a rogue rainy day.

See a Movie

Another one for those rainy days – or something to round off an evening after a nice restful day away from the parks. Orlando is full of places to catch a film, with mega multi-screens and large-screen iMAX theatres that kids will love!

Water Parks

They’re not just about the waterslides and constant splashing around! You can have as much or as little action as you want at Orlando’s water parks.

Aquatica, Wet n Wild and Disney’s Blizzard Beach all have lovely beach or sunbed areas where you can relax, read and sunbathe, or float around on a ring or down a lazy river. Plus if the kids do get a bit bored the options still there to have some fun on the rides and slides!

Lounge by the Pool

Depending on how long you’re staying in Florida, you might see staying close to the hotel as being a waste of a day. But then again, after all that walking round the parks, the idea of not venturing more than a few metres in any direction might be right up your street!

Head for the Beach

Florida has some seriously gorgeous beaches, and with warm weather pretty much guaranteed (they don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing!) you can use this day to really get that tan going – ready to make pals jealous when you get home!

Downtown Disney

If you’re staying at a Disney Resort, use your rest day to explore Downtown Disney with its pretty waterfront, restaurants, entertainment and shops. In fact, you might want to save your gift shopping for Downtown Disney as some shops have merchandise that’s not available anywhere else.

Kids can still burn off some energy at DisneyQuest – an indoor interactive theme park.
